Oscar Ngu Atanga, Dakar, Senegal

Oscar Ngu Atanga is a Cameroonian-British interdisciplinary artist, composer, researcher and farmer working between Berlin, Germany, Cotonou, Benin, and Dakar, Senegal. Working across sound, spatial installation, live performance, film, photography, field recording and textiles, he explores how memory, landscape, archives and cultural knowledge move through people, places and materials.

His work has been presented internationally, including at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), Humboldt Forum and Centro Cultural Franco-Moçambicano. He holds a BA in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford; this background continues to shape a research practice that brings critical analysis and close attention to context into dialogue with listening, experimentation and making.

He is the founder of Taneka Studio, a research and design house rooted in Benin and informed by work across West Africa and Europe. Drawing on more than a decade of travel and exchange across Africa, Asia and Europe, Taneka brings textile and material research into conversation with craft, ecology, agriculture and design. Its perspective is shaped by movement between places, and by close attention to the materials, landscapes and practices encountered there. Atanga’s pedagogical work extends this enquiry through workshops and shared learning.

His live performances connect lineages of Afro-diasporic music with the many sonic worlds encountered through wide-ranging listening, study and experimentation. Across his work, Atanga follows ideas wherever they lead, moving freely between mediums and beyond the categories that seek to contain them.
